Gen 2

In 1316, amid the Great Famine, triplets Henry, Richard, and Eleanor were born. This period was marked by widespread hunger and suffering across Europe, as relentless rain and cold weather devastated crops, leading to food shortages and malnutrition.

Henry:

Henry, the eldest of the triplets, was initially the second heir to the family’s small estate. However, tragedy struck early in his life. When Henry was just four years old, his mother succumbed to illness, likely exacerbated by the ongoing famine. A year later, at the age of five, Henry also passed away from the same sickness, leaving behind a grieving family.

Richard:

Richard, the younger of the triplet boys, became the second heir following Henry's death. His early years were marked by significant loss. At the age of four, Richard lost his mother, and a year later, his brother Henry. When Richard was six years old, his father, Holden, also fell victim to the same illness that had claimed his mother and brother, likely a result of the unsanitary conditions and lack of proper nutrition during the famine.

After the passing of his parents, Richard and Eleanor were taken in by their maternal grandparents. Their grandparents' farm provided a modest livelihood, and Richard found solace in tending to the animals and garden. He particularly enjoyed working with the cows and chickens, a daily routine that brought some stability amidst the upheaval.

In 1325, when Richard was nine, his grandfather passed away from typhoid fever, a common and deadly disease in the 14th century, often spread through contaminated water. His grandmother, undeterred, managed the household until 1327, when she arranged marriages for both Richard and Eleanor with the Audley family, a modest landowning family in the region. These alliances were typical of the time, securing the family’s future through strategic marriages.

A year later, in 1328, their grandmother passed away as well, leaving Richard and Eleanor in the care of their uncle, Timothy O'Brien. Uncle Timothy looked after them until his death in 1329. By this time, Richard had reached his teenage years and was able to take over the farm, ensuring his family’s survival.

In 1330, at just 13 years old, Eleanor was married to Sawyer Audley (19), in accordance with the arranged marriage. Richard, now left alone on the farm, spent the next two years managing the land and taking care of the animals, including his late grandparents' dog, Lisa, who remained his faithful companion until her death in 1340.

In 1332, at the age of 16, Richard married Riley Audley (13), fulfilling the marriage arrangement made years prior by his grandmother. Despite their young age, the couple began their life together on the farm. In 1334, their first child, John, was born, the first of many children to come. Over the years, Richard and Riley had seven children: John, Hayden, Cooper, Dalton, Grant, Oletha, and Tinble.

The Black Death:

The mid-14th century brought one of the most devastating events in European history: the Black Death. In 1346, the plague reached their village. Richard’s wife, Riley, contracted the disease and, tragically, spread it to most of their children and Richard himself. Within a matter of days, most of Richard's family perished from the illness.

At the age of 30, Richard succumbed to the Black Death, leaving behind only his eldest son, John. John would carry on the family legacy, but the devastation of the plague had left deep scars on the family, as it did on so many others during this dark chapter of history.
