Gen 5

Richard Hawthrone (Heir)

Born in 1370, Richard learnd early age, that weight of his family’s survival rested on his young shoulders. His mother, Lassie, died when he was just five, after giving birth to his youngest sister, Ida. Richard’s father, Ryder, left for war soon after, leaving Richard to grow up quickly in the shadow of these tragedies.

By 1388, Richard was old enough to fight in the ongoing conflicts and was sent to war alongside his grandfather, John. When he returned in 1393, Richard was no longer the carefree boy who had played with his siblings in the fields of their estate. He had learned that life was fragile, and he carried that awareness into adulthood.

In 1394, Richard married a young girl named Elisabeth Cook, a marriage arranged to secure the family’s future. From their wedding night onward, Richard focused on ensuring that a heir was born. But tragedy followed him relentlessly. Between 1398 and 1404, Elisabeth bore several children—Marcus, Gerard, Clinton, Dorothy, Ericka, Felix, and Arthur—but most either died in infancy or were stillborn. In 1404, Elisabeth herself succumbed to death during childbirth, leaving Richard alone once again.

War beckoned for his father, Ryder, in 1408, and when he returned in 1413, Richard found himself responsible not just for his own children but also for his aging father. Richard’s later years were plagued by famine, and in 1425, Ryder died from starvation, the final tragedy in a long line of losses that had haunted Richard’s life.

Alice Hawthrone

The eldest of the Hawthrone siblings, Alice was born in 1368. She was only seven when her mother died giving birth to her sister, Ida, and in the years that followed, Alice assumed much of the responsibility for helping to raise her younger siblings.

Though still a child herself, Alice took on the duties of a mother, cooking, cleaning, and caring for her brothers and sisters as her father, Ryder, went off to war.

In 1386, at the age of 18, Alice was married off to Johan von Falken, a match made to strengthen family alliances. Leaving her childhood home behind, Alice embarked on a new chapter of life as a wife. She gave birth to several children (Henry, Catherine and Alexander), wich all reached adulthood)

Isabelle Hawthrone

Born in 1370, life for Isabella would not stretch into the years of adulthood. In 1382, at the tender age of 12, Isabella succumbed to a sudden illness that swept through the village. Nobody really cared about her passing, since it meant one female mouth less to feed

Matilda and Robert Hawthrone

Born in 1373, Matilda and Robert Hawthrone entered the world together. Matilda’s life was tragically short—she died in 1374.

Her twin brother Robert has had priority over her, since he was heir replacement material, so when it came to who got to eat, she was not important.

He later married to Elaina Hargrove and had several children (Anton, Lilian and Ezekiel). The towns myth says that his wife could hear everything.

Ida Hawthrone

Ida was the last child born to Lassie Hawthrone, her birth coming at the ultimate cost of her mother’s life. Born in 1375, Ida was a quiet child, often overlooked in the bustle of the family’s struggles.

[Note: I for some reason do not have a picture of her]

In 1390, at the age of 15, Ida was married off to Jule Smith. Like her sister Alice, Ida’s marriage was arranged for practical purposes.

She ended up having 3 children (Emma, Matthew and Isabel), but only her son reached adulthood.

Gen 4

Ornelle Rosen
Ornelle was born as the first child of John Hawthorne in 1347. At 13 years old, in 1361, while working in the fields of her family’s farm, a 29-year-old man named Atticus Rosen passed by and took an immediate interest in her. He paid her father, John, a substantial sum of money and arranged for their marriage, a common practice in medieval times when marriages were often based on financial or social alliances rather than affection. That same year, she gave birth to her first child, Margery Rosen. Over the following years, Ornelle bore three more children: William, Thomas, and Edith. Tragically, in 1386, at the age of 39, Ornelle died from complications related to childbirth.

Ryder as a child
Ryder Hawthrone
Born in 1348, Ryder was the first son of John and became the heir to the family estate. Unlike many of his siblings, Ryder witnessed the deaths of only two family members in his youth. He found solace in working the family’s fields, spending much of his time tending to the chickens and crops, responsibilities typical of peasant life in medieval England.

In 1368, at the age of 20, Ryder married Lassie Woode. That same year, their first daughter, Alice, was born. Over the years, Ryder and Lassie had seven children, though three died young, as was common due to the high child mortality rates in medieval times. In 1378, during the birth of their last child, Ida, Lassie tragically passed away from childbirth complications, leaving Ryder devastated.

In that same year, Ryder was called to serve in the Hundred Years’ War, a conflict that had raged between England and France since 1337. He left his children under the care of his father, John. While he was away, tragedy struck again when his daughter Isabelle passed away in 1382.

Fortunately, Ryder survived the war and returned home safely in 1383. Over the following years, he watched most of his surviving children marry and start families of their own. In 1395, Ryder’s father, John, passed away after a long life, marking a turning point for Ryder as he assumed full control of the family estate.

In 1408, Ryder was once again called to serve in the ongoing conflict. He returned home in 1413 but had grown weary and physically worn from the years of war and hard labor. He spent his final years working in the fields and helping his son Richard raise his children. Ryder passed away in 1420 at the age of 72.

Alfred Hawthrone
Alfred was born in 1349 but tragically passed away just one year later in 1350, falling victim to the Black Death.

Bedelia Hawthrone                                                                                                                                 Bedelia was stillborn in 1350, never seeing the light of day.

Garry Hawthrone                                                                                                                                      Garry was born in 1352 and married young to a woman named Corliss. Together, they had two children, though their names are not on record, which was not uncommon for families of lesser social standing. Garry lived a quiet life, working the land and raising his family, passing away in 1405 at the age of 53. As a child he looked like a copy of his uncle Cooper.

Edward Hawthrone                                                                                                                                  Born in 1354, Edward married Rowena Hawthorne and had one child with her. Unlike some of his siblings, Edward lived a relatively peaceful life, avoiding the conflicts and tragedies that plagued many during this era. He passed away in 1400 at the age of 46. He married Rowena Hawthrone and had one child with her.

Gen 3

John Hawthorne

John Hawthorne, born in 1334, became the heir to the family estate just before the beginning of the Hundred Years’ War, a protracted conflict between England and France that would span from 1337 to 1453. His early childhood was peaceful compared to what was to come, but the backdrop of political tensions was always present.

At the age of four, in 1338, John’s father, Richard, arranged his future marriage to Lily Wootton, a girl from a neighboring family. The agreement was that John would marry Lily once she turned 13.

John loved the farms chicks
In 1340, when John was six, the family’s beloved dog, Lisa, passed away, which saddened John, as he had grown up with her. However, much greater loss was waiting for the young heir.

The year 1346 marked the arrival of the Black Death in their village. At just 12 years old, John witnessed the harrowing deaths of his parents, Richard and Riley, along with his brothers, as the plague swept through Europe, killing millions. John and his younger sister Tinble were the only survivors of the immediate family, making John the sole heir at an young age.

Lily Wootton
In 1347, at just 14 years old, John married Lily Wootton as previously arranged. Despite his youth, he had to take on the responsibilities of running the family farm and raising his sister Tinble. That same year, his first child was born, marking the start of a large family. Between 1347 and 1354, John and Lily had six children: Ornelle, Ryder, Alfred, Bedelina, Garry, and Edward.

The couple's life together, however, was continuously shadowed by the specter of death. In 1350, their young son Alfred succumbed to the Black Death during one of the recurring outbreaks. Their daughter Bedelina was tragically stillborn. In 1353, John's sister Tinble passed away from an unknown illness (Cancer).

In 1358, Lily died from tuberculosis. With Lily’s passing, John was left to care for his remaining children and continue managing the farm. A few years later in 1361, an older, wealthier man offered John a considerable sum to marry his 13-year-old daughter. Without hesitation, John accepted the proposal.       As John aged, he found solace in helping his son Ryder, who had taken over most of the farm’s operations, raise his own children. Meanwhile, his other surviving children married and moved away, starting their own families. John’s later years were relatively quiet and lived to the age of 62, passing away in 1395.
